On October 16, 2018, the EbA South project, with the key resource persons from IISD, organised a training workshop on the Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) planning tool ‘ALivE – Adaptation, Livelihoods and Ecosystems’ in Victoria, the Seychelles.

Totally, there were 25 participants from relevant departments under the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change; academic institution; local stakeholders from the project sites; other EbA project; national EbA South project team and the Project Management Unit.

As a computer-based tool to organise and analyse information for EbA planning with a rapid qualitative assessment process, ALivE can be applied in any ecosystem and designed for use in the design phase of projects that have already established EbA objectives.

The training workshop first set the scene by refreshing the common understanding on the characteristics of effective EbA. Then, the participants worked in groups to brainstorm the underlying information necessary for EbA planning, including livelihood dependence on ecosystems; impacts of climate change on ecosystems; adaptation outcomes and EbA options. Finally, the ALivE tool was demonstrated on all the steps of the EbA planning process.

The training was very well received and the participants expressed their high interest in the tool.

Mr. Selvan Pillay, Director-General, Climate Change Division, Department of Energy and Climate Change, Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, expressed appreciation on opportunities to strengthen institutional capacity from the workshop, which will be beneficial in implementing EbA activities to enhance resilience of vulnerable communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Mr. Pillay also encouraged the participants to provide any feedback from user’s perspectives in order to further improve the tool.

This training workshop was the last to organise in the EbA South project pilot countries, after conducted earlier in Mauritania and Nepal (both in July 2018).
