The Adaptation Futures 2018 conference was held in June 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa. The conference sought to generate dialogue for solutions between key actors in global adaptation. The event attracted over 1,300 delegates from around the world, including scientists, practitioners, business leaders and policymakers. One of the central conference themes was that of South-South learning – particularly delving into the question of how the Southern perspective changes the framework of adaptation and development, and how to enhance South-South collaboration. In this light and to share the experiences of the EbA South project, a member of the technical advisory team attended the conference to present on the subject of “Using Adaptive Management to Achieve Sustainability”. The presentation drew on lessons learned from the three pilot countries, to highlight the importance of learning from the experiences within a project and continually adapting to ensure long-term sustainability of interventions.

In association with the Adaptation Futures 2018 conference, a satellite event was hosted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fűr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as a gathering of the international EbA Community of Practice. This three-day workshop gathered more than 50 people from countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America to share and learn from the practical experiences of other countries and programmes. The focus of this workshop was on effective governance of EbA, with the objective of developing harmonized approaches for the effective implementation of EbA.

These events provided a platform for the EbA South team to interact with the broader adaptation community and share experiences, lessons learned and best practices for Ecosystem-based Adaptation.
