Drought cycle management in arid and semi-arid Kenya: a relevant disaster risk reduction model? An empirical study of Garissa, Marsabit, Samburu and Wajir

Posted on: 5 Jul 2016 / Submitted by: Vickie

This study seeks to evaluate the relevance of the Drought Cycle Management model as a Disaster Risk Reduction strategy, through examining its application in Kenya. The Drought Cycle Management model aims to increase the resilience and to strengthen the coping capacity of communities and households so as to reduce their vulnerability to the risks of disaster.

The four strategies were identified that give an opportunity to reduce impact of drought at household level:

  • establishing a livestock management structure;
  • diversifying household income;
  • taking measures to conserve water;
  • accessing credit facilities at the community level.
